Seeing as we seem to live in such a modern world, it is hard to believe sweatshops still exist. Fueled by the wants of first world peoples, sweat shops live on. A case study on Nike sweatshops in Vietnam during the 1990's showed that Nike did not pay the minimum wage to the sweat shop workers and violated Vietnam labor laws. Not only are these workers working for barely a dollar a day in hazardous conditions, the proper health and safety measures were not acknowledged. Sexual, physical, mental harassment and child labor occur in these sweatshops as well. Many children who can not go to school are forced to work in sweatshops from dusk to dawn, 6 days a week to help support their family in these third world countries. In 1996 a 48 hour program by CBS news covered a sweatshop in Vietnam, in the program viewers were able to see the inhumane acts occurring in the sweatshops. On November 15th 2017, Thomson Reuters reported on the CBC news that sweatshop workers in Turkey who work for Zara had stitched pleas for help into the clothing they were making. These videos show the brutally harsh conditions sweatshop workers are forced to undergo everyday, just to bring some income into their homes; With the current events creating more awareness for sweatshops across the world, do you believe the sweatshop rein by major corporations will continue in the coming years, or shall the sweatshop empire crumble into more civilized ways of work?
